Hello there! I’m Kim, lovely to meet you!

If the picture wasn’t enough of a giveaway, let me begin my confessing that I’m a major dork… a short, major dork. (I’m no stranger to climbing on cabinets to pull something off of the top shelf!) And yes, I always rock a pair of obnoxiously-green rain boots when the weather requires such footwear.

A bit more about me –

I’m a native New Yorker turned Bostonian (and loving it!). I have a serious weakness for Greek food, pollo enchiladas, fish tacos, and soft-scrambled eggs with salsa. I have a comparable weakness for sweets inspired by the good ol’ Almond Joy. Speaking of, I made this chocolate/ coconut/ almond cake to celebrate the second “birthday” of TMB!

Beyond the kitchen, I love wandering around Boston, trying different restaurants, people-watching, and snapping pictures. (You’ll get a glimpse of my wanderings in the Side Notes series!) And if I’m not exploring the city, you might just be able to find me at a concert – especially if there are keys and acoustic guitar involved. I also thoroughly enjoy all things Seinfeld, watching (admittedly judge-worthy) Bravo reality shows, and the movies Clue and Clueless (yes… really).

Baking by moonlight –

I started The Moonlight Baker® in August of 2010, the summer before my senior year of high school (hence, if you find yourself looking through the archives and reading about college applications and the like, that’s why). Knowing nothing about website development, food photography, or blogging in general, I started TMB on a complete whim. Suffice to say there’s been a learning curve, and still today I’m continuing to learn what works and what doesn’t.

The name The Moonlight Baker® came about as a result of a tradition that my friends and I have. At or around midnight, we turn on an episode of Law and Order: SVU, whip up a batch of brownies (usually from a box, considering the hour), wait in anticipation, and proceed to eat hot, chewy brownies straight out of the oven. It’s perfection.

As a nod to this tradition, the first post on TMB was this brownie recipe. And there have been several since, including my personal favorite – Ina Garten’s Outrageous Brownies.

Photography knitty gritty –

I am by no means a professional photographer. I’m just a regular twenty-something gal who likes to make food and then take pictures of it.

I shoot with a Nikon D3000, fitted with either a Nikkor 18-55mm lens or a Nikkor 50mm 1.8 lens (note: all photos before January 2013 were taken with the former lens). I use this camera, coupled with natural light, for all recipe post photography. Side Note photos are taken with my phone.

I try to edit my photos as little as possible. After 2.5 years of blogging, however, I decided to up my photo-game and invested in Lightroom 4. I don’t do any super-fancy editing as, frankly, I don’t know what half the tools in the program do, but I have noticed a definite improvement in my end-result images.
